On 19 June the University of York marked Refugee Week with a celebration of the York Sanctuary Fund and its life-changing impact supporting asylum seeking students and academics.

The evening brought together friends, supporters, and beneficiaries of the York Sanctuary Fund at the Royal Society of Arts in London. The York Sanctuary Fund is a vital fundraising initiative that provides financial support to those who are fleeing conflict. Since it was set up in 2023, the fund has provided life-changing help to 34 scholars from 20 countries, and 10 Human Rights Defenders.

Leading the night was renowned actor Colin Salmon, best known for his roles in the James Bond films, who spoke passionately about the role of education in changing lives.

Salmon’s words were echoed by Sharan Srinivas, Director of Protecting Rights Defenders at the Open Society Foundations, who highlighted the vital role that universities like York play in the protection ecosystem for human rights defenders.

A highlight of the night was speeches given by Human Rights Defenders Leni and Memet, both supported by the York Sanctuary Fund, which allows them to continue their work safely. Leni, an artist-activist from the Philippines shared the importance of hope for the future:

“As human rights activists, while it is important for us to expose all the wrongs in the world in these challenging times, it is equally important for us to illuminate the path, to show people that the vision of an alternative, progressive future, is still possible.”

Memet, a Uyghur rights advocate and researcher, also spoke about what it means to find refuge and be able to continue his work at York:

“When I arrived at York, it felt like I was home […] The fellowship opened up my world, one full of opportunity, and most importantly free from stress, worry and anxiety.”

Memet’s words strike a chord with York’s mission to be the University of Opportunity, where everyone has the opportunity to pursue education safely at York. Rooted in a founding vision of opportunity, the York Sanctuary Fund ensures access to education for those who need it most.
