In a dynamic and interconnected global economy, the role of management has never been more important.

At York, you can choose to study business and management with a language you studied at A-level, or study business and management with a new language as a beginner ('ab initio').

Our new Business and Management with French degree, equips you to be a holistic, resourceful, innovative and reflective practitioner of management with command of the French language. The course supports you to independently identify and develop your own English and French specialisms, and creatively engage with multiple disciplines. You’ll be numerically and digitally literate, robust and ethically sound, and sensitive to 21st century workplace needs for sustainability and diversity.

Equipped with proficiency in French, you'll be capable of using the language itself as well as drawing on the underlying academic knowledge that underpins any language study.

You'll leave the university capable of working in business internationally and seeking out, collating, managing, and analysing information to make evidence-based decisions that you'll be able to summarise and present confidently and coherently.

Course content

Our business and management degrees share some common elements in Year 1 to introduce you to the core concepts underpinning these key disciplines.

As you progress, you'll develop the knowledge and skills acquired in your first year, giving both depth and breadth to your learning. You'll be able to choose optional modules to widen your knowledge or bring your specialism into focus.

Through the year out you will build on your language education and the wider business and management competencies further, not only equipping you for the international jobs market but enhancing your final year by providing you with experience for analysis and reflection.

Year 1

In your first year, you'll study four core modules in Business and Management, which introduce some of the key concepts and techniques used. You'll also study two core modules in French. The modules give a broad overview of topics you may want to specialise in, with assessments designed to develop your academic skills.

  • If you have studied French to A level, you'll study post-A level modules
  • If you are taking French ab initio (from scratch), you'll study ab initio modules.

Business and Management core modules

We'll introduce you to an exciting range of texts and critical approaches in your first year to lay the foundation for your degree.

Post-A level core modules

Ab initio core modules

Academic integrity module

In addition to the above you will also need to complete our online Academic Integrity module.

This module covers some of the essential skills and knowledge which will help you to study independently and produce work of a high academic standard which is vital for success at York.

This module will:

  • define academic integrity and academic misconduct
  • explain why and when you should reference source material and other people's work
  • provide interactive exercises to help you to assess whether you've understood the concepts
  • provide answers to FAQs and links to useful resources.

Year 2

In your second year, you'll study four core modules in Business and Management. You'll also study one core and one option module in French to advanced level. Modules build on the concepts introduced in Year 1 and you'll explore challenging questions and apply your learning to practical business problems.
