Preparing for university

How are you feeling about going to uni? Excited? Nervous? If so, don't worry. The run-up to starting can be a mixed bag of emotions for many people. But we'd like to reassure you that we're here to support you, and make your journey to York as smooth as possible.

To help you prepare, we asked our students to share their tips for things to do over the summer, settling in and making friends, and some of their favourite student-friendly recipes.

Check our New students' welcome for all the info you need to know before you arrive.

Things to do over the summer

To be extra prepared, you can buy student bus tickets from the First Bus app before you arrive. It's also helpful to follow the Uni’s social media (like accommodation colleges) to keep updated with their events.

Student recipes

For many students, going to university is their first taste of independent living. If you're starting with little or no cooking experience, we've got you covered. We asked some of our current students what they love to cook (and eat) at uni.

Have good, healthy bases for your meals. It’s a small trick to easily make your diet much healthier. Try swapping white bread for brown – preferably from a bakery, as it will have less artificial preservatives. There are nice bakeries in York, my personal favourite being Bluebird Bakery in the Shambles market.

Settling in and making friends

During your first weeks, our 2nd- and 3rd-Years will help you move in, get you settled and show you around. You'll also meet student mentors, who'll provide peer support through your first year. They're trained to offer practical advice and a friendly ear.

It's helpful to socialise with your new flatmates. Make plans and settle into your new city together. It’s really exciting to explore the new place you are now living in! In York, one of my favourite places to relax and read is the York Museum Gardens – plus it is a great place to spend time with your friends.

Freshers' Week

What's it really like, and what can you expect? During the week, our Students’ Union puts on events for 1st-Years – one being Freshers’ Fair, where you’ll find stalls for societies and sports clubs. It's a great opportunity to get involved in our campus community.
