Unlike most other universities, accommodation at York is integrated into our eleven colleges, creating a community that you'll be a part of throughout your time at York and beyond.
What's a college?
We're proud to be one of just a handful of UK universities with a collegiate system. Your college is your accommodation, close to social, study and catering facilities, each with their own common room.
When you join us, you'll become a lifelong member of a distinct community, which will be your home from home, whether you live on or off campus. Your college will provide you with a network of support and a calendar of events and activities to help you settle in, develop skills and explore your interests.
When do I pick a college?
Your college is your accommodation. When you list your accommodation preferences, you’ll be listing preferences for individual rooms in each college. Your accommodation offer will be for a room in one of our colleges and when you arrive, you’ll move into your college and they’ll be there to welcome you.
If you decide to live off campus, don’t worry, you’ll still become a member of a college and gain access to their common room, events, support and guidance.

Accommodation at York is centered around our eleven colleges, we have ten undergraduate colleges and one postgraduate-only college. These are divided up into Campus West and Campus East.

What's the best college for me and my course?
It sounds cheesy, but the best college is the one that you’re in. That’s where you’ll make your first friends, get involved with activities and events, and start the adventure of university life. You don't need to apply for a particular college based on your course. Our compact campus means that all colleges are a short walk from departments and teaching buildings. The most important thing is that you’re part of one.

If you've been browsing our accommodation pages recently, you may have spotted a change. We've removed banding from our accommodation listings, and here's why:
After working closely with the University of York Students' Union, we realised that the old banding system didn't quite capture the wide variety of accommodation options we offer. The new approach allows us to give you a more accurate picture of our rent prices, reflecting both the age and quality of each individual property. By removing the banding, we aim to make rent prices clearer.

*Postgraduate accommodation in Eden’s Court, Derwent College, is the only option available for PGCE students. PGCE students are allocated rooms within the same block due to their earlier course start dates. Non-PGCE postgraduate students can also apply for this room type along with the other room types listed.
Living off campus
If you decide to live off campus during your time at York, you'll still be a member of a college and have access to its common room, support, and guidance.
