Website redesign

Our University website has a new design. This launch marks an exciting milestone, as it applies our vibrant University of York brand across our most used channel – our website.

Maintaining a consistent brand is crucial for any university, as it helps build recognition and trust.

Our updated brand identity, which guides how we talk about York and how we present ourselves, has been rolling out across our publications and other channels over the past couple of years, with its distinctive colours, typefaces and layouts.

Now, our website proudly aligns with this bold, modern look, ensuring a common experience wherever you encounter the University of York.

Enhancing the site experience

The content and site structure remains the same, so everything is still where you’d expect. But the overall design, page layouts and menus have had some big improvements.

We’ve made changes to how our content looks and feels, significantly enhancing the site experience for all visitors. This includes a more engaging visual experience and clearer, more consistent ways of presenting information.

Behind the scenes, we’ve also implemented accessibility and performance enhancements to ensure the site is fast, responsive, and easily navigable for everyone.

Perhaps one of the most impactful changes is our new site-wide menu with drop-down options to introduce key sections of the site and quickly get you to the information you need.

This global navigation will appear consistently on every page, making it much easier to find your way around the site, no matter where you start or what page you’ve browsed to. We’ve designed it to be clear, comprehensive, and to offer quick access to the most important sections of our site.

Next steps and feedback

All of the work was done internally, by a small team within the Department of Communications, alongside their day-to-day work keeping the website running smoothly.

The next step is for the team to roll out the new design to additional systems beyond the main website, and continue to add new templates and other ways of interacting with York on the web.

There will be a feedback option across the top of all pages from launch until Friday 25 July. If you like the new design, please let the digital team know - and if you spot any glitches, they want to know about those, too.
