Valuing Voices

The Valuing Voices for Equitable and Responsible Research project supports best practice in research and research culture.

Our main focus is the creation of a tool that enables the research community to design and deliver equitable and responsible research projects that place people and society at the forefront. The tool has been co-produced by members of our research community, including practitioners, stakeholders and global partners at The University of York and Mahidol University.

Working together, we have identified five principles for responsible and equitable research. The tool guides researchers through these principles to ensure they are considered from the start of a research project.

Five principles for Equitable and Responsible Research

Engagement and impact
Research is credible and has real-world benefits when you engage with those affected by and interested in it.
Team equity and diversity
Diverse research teams generate fresh perspectives on complex problems, address unfair hierarchies and promote global equity.
Strategic risk mapping
Research plans are strengthened by careful risk mapping that makes the most of limited resources.
Environmental sustainability
Environmentally conscious research sets a societal precedent, is cost-effective and safeguards the future of research.
Reflection and learning
Research practices are made effective and robust when they are informed by reflective learning.

The development of the online tool

Over the last year, we have been developing the online tool for members of the research community to use when designing and delivering their research. In May 2025 it officially launched in its beta form and we'd like you to provide feedback so we can make amendments for the final launch towards the end of this year.

Take a look at the animation video below, developed by Nifty Fox Creative, which tells you a bit more detail about why you should try the tool.

Visit our website to try out the tool and let us know what you think by using the 'Feedback' function. All feedback will be used to improve our final version to ensure that it aligns with the research community's needs.

Why should you try the tool?
