Funding

The University offers information on Postgraduate research fees and funding opportunities available to applicants, both internal and external, for UK and international students, which include, amongst many the following:

Wolfson Humanities Scholarship

With generous funding from the Wolfson Foundation, the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships fund doctoral research in three areas: History, Literature and Languages.

  • Funding: £36,250 per year
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 22 January 2025, 5pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students

WRoCAH funding 

The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) is a Doctoral Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. The College is responsible for the distribution of AHRC-funded doctoral studentships for these universities.

  • Funding: Varies
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 22 January 2025, 5pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students

China Scholarships Council Scholarship 

We're pleased to offer up to ten joint-funded PhD scholarships in collaboration with the China Scholarships Council.

  • Funding: 100% of tuition fees for the full duration, which is typically three years; a grant for living costs; one return flight from China; UK visa fees 
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 22 January 2025, 5pm GMT
  • Open to: Students from China

AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards in the Arts and Humanities

The University of York is pleased to be awarding six of these AHRC Doctoral Landscape awards to fund students beginning their doctoral research in our Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

  • Funding: Home fee status level, calculated based on the estimated UKRI rate
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 21 January 2026, 5pm GMT
  • Open to: International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students

Elizabeth Salter Fund

The Elizabeth Salter Fund was created in memory of Professor Elizabeth Salter (1925-1980), one of the founders of the Centre for Medieval Studies.  It supports research and career development of postgraduate students at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the form of grants to support all or part of the costs of travel to archaeological or historic sites, archives, libraries and museums to conduct research on unique holdings; to support the purchase of photographs or microfilms in lieu of travel; or to support travel to and registration fees for conferences at which the student will give a paper.
