Low carbon fuels and chemicals

We aim to develop biotechnologies that could contribute to the realisation of net-zero carbon. Our work is focused on the use of plant and algal biomass as the principal sources of carbon for the production of chemicals, materials and liquid transportation fuel.

In order to achieve this goal we are taking an interdisciplinary approach to develop new varieties of plants, developing better enzymes for biomass breakdown and improved microorganisms for efficient chemical production.

Our projects

We are exploring new lignocellulose degrading enzymes and associated proteins to improve the process efficiency and economics of sustainable bio-based industries.
We've focused on reducing the content of polyunsaturated fatty acid in rapeseed oil to improve thermal stability.
We are using advanced genetic tools to improve the quality of biomass feedstock for biorefining and tailoring effective methods for biomass conversion.
We have several opportunities to further your study.
We work closely with a broad range of partners to tackle the challenges of the 21st Century.
