Collaborations and partnerships for the Department of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology works closely with partners locally, nationally and across the world. We make the most of our location in the city of York, a fantastic place for archaeology. Staff and students benefit from collaborations with commercial, heritage, and industry partners across the city. We are also connected to a network of partners via our alumni, who have taken up roles in archaeology, heritage and museums across the globe.

Types of collaboration

Undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate in ongoing projects and placements across the city; staff and PhD researchers collaborate on research and consultancy projects. We are always keen to work with external partners and to explore new types of collaboration so please do contact us with any bright ideas.

Highlighted research: Romans at Home

A team from York Archaeological Trust and the University of York took Amarna House care home residents on a trip through time to ancient Eboracum. Using archaeological artefacts excavated from around York, replica items, and a selection of smells like lavender and frankincense, Chris Tuckley guided care home residents to imagine living in a Roman home.

This activity, “Romans at Home” was created as part of outreach for the Arts and Humanities Research Council project OTHER EYES, bringing multisensorial experiences of the ancient past to the modern day, PI Dr Colleen Morgan, Department of Archaeology. It was designed by Eleanor Drew, a Digital Heritage MSc student currently enrolled at the University of York. The handling collection was created using York Impact Accelerator Funds and received an Open Access award for bringing scientific research to the public.

Romans at Home was designed to bring archaeological research and artefacts to people confined indoors, a common problem highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea is to bring museum and heritage experiences to a wider audience.

There are plans to expand the project with more sessions and more care homes if possible.
